This morning our friend and Veterinarian from Mullum Vet Richard Gregory came by early to take the horns off a Dexter cross Heifer we have on the farm for servicing. As usual it was blood and gore; however, Richard does a great job at making the animal comfortable with plenty of anesthetic and a gentle touch.
In a weeks time it will all be a memory and the young heifer will be much safer to handle through out her long life.
We have had more. Then again, we have had much less. It’s a little like is the milk bucket half full or half empty. We are happy regardless and it’s a good feeling to be milking again. This mornings haul as you will see is a little over 3 litres. Looking forward to Alison working her magic making homegrown butter again and I know there are a few pigs who will be happy for the excess milk once that happens again.
Over the last week I have been spending lots of time in the pasture checking in on our cows who we have shifted to our back paddocks. Although we have done a few kilometers of fencing since we bought the farm there is still plenty
A big day on the farm with the cattle. With Alison away on a cheese making course it was up to me and the 3 girls to put the cattle through the yards for drenching.
In about 3 hours we had the job done and dusted. I will scan and post the detailed notes of the doses and procedures done to the cattle but right now I have to get my self away from the keyboard and onto the tractor to help the Peter McDonald fencing crew.
It looks like its the year of the Girl at the Four Girl Dexter Stud. One of our first 4 cows, Reanna, has just given birth to a lovely little black dexter heifer calf. Congratulations Aubrey, last year you got a Red Heifer and this year you get a black one. Well done Girls.
Yesterday as I was pulling out of the farm with Dan Swan on our way to assist Sarah with her first 100 mile table, I noticed another one of our Dexter Heifers was about to calf. A quick text to Alison and the girls headed out to the birthing paddock to check on things. Here are some photos taken by Morley of the experience. Alison believes our first cow Condamine must be some sort of Royalty. “What a beautiful girl she is, Morley was able to get right up to her and be part of the birth.”
The girls named Condamine’s calf after our neighbour Catherine who also got to witness the birth.
Another calf for the Cromwell Farm yesterday. Morley reckons it’s a Bull Calf. I reckon our Dexter Cross heifers are awesome cows.
The top wood shed paddock is starting to fill out with calves. Thank goodness we have daughters to keep us organised. Aubrey is sitting beside me with her smart phone reviewing the information on the calving so far. Here is what she has recorded:
