It’s day 2 and our new horse is settling in nicely. Just like with any new purchase there is a surge of excitement to try and know everything you can about your new acquisition.
Thank you for sharing information with us friends. Michael Illenberger just sent me a link to this information about Walers.
Broadcast date: Monday 23 June 2014
Ros and Janet live in different parts of the country and became friends through their love of the endangered breed.
In the 1800s, Waler horses were everywhere in Australia, bred in the tens of thousands for the trade to India.
They were famous for their even temperament, their hardiness and their loyal, affectionate nature.
After gaining legendary status as the mounts ridden in the charge at Beersheba by the Australian Light Horse, Walers lapsed into obscurity after the war.
Janet and Ros, (a former Waler breeder) are part of a group working to save this rare and loveable horse from extinction, Waler Horse Owners and Breeders Association Australia Inc.
