When you breed and raise animals for a living getting to the finish line is a time of mixed emotions. Today we are getting organised to take four of our pigs to our local abattoir in Booyong. We are very lucky to have such a great facility less then half an hour from our farm. Having to haul your animals long distances can be very costly and not ideal for the finished product due to the stress of a long road trip. This is when home killing is your only economic option for small producers.
For us having the assurance of an abattoir combined with our legendary Butcher Pat from Clunes Meat Market is the way to go. We will be looking into the legalities and requirements for home killing down the track so we have that option as well.
