Top Things to Do in the Byron Bay Hinterland on Your Weekend Getaway

Read on for the top things to do in the Byron Bay Hinterland! While Byron Bay itself is often touted as the best of the Northern NSW coast, if you head a little way inland to the lush Hinterland, you’ll find more treasures to explore (and fewer crowds!). While we believe that a weekend isn’t really enough time to explore everything on offer, we’ve outlined a few ideas to get you on your way.

The Byron Bay Hinterland offers a perfect escape for those looking to experience the natural beauty and laid-back vibe of the region, away from the bustling coast. With its rainforests, quaint villages, and stunning viewpoints, there’s no shortage of activities to fill a weekend getaway…

Explore Waterfalls and Rainforests

Top Things to Do in the Byron Bay Hinterland Minyon Falls Lookout

The Hinterland is home to some of the most breathtaking waterfalls in New South Wales.

Minyon Falls, nestled within the Nightcap National Park, is a must-see and is only a 20-minute drive from our Cromwell Farm House and Middle Shed in Goonengerry. Take it all in from the lookout (pictured) or enjoy the 13-kilometre loop walking track down to the bottom for the full experience! For a shorter trek, check out Killen Falls, where you can cool off in the natural pool beneath the falls. Then, head back to The Farmhouse or Middle Shed for a soak in the hot tub or the outdoor bath.

  • Tip: Keep in mind that the more rain we’ve had, the more the falls will be falling! And don’t forget to check any safety alerts or park closures on NSW National Parks before you set off.

Take in Charming Villages

Byron Bay Hinterland Bangalow

Explore the picturesque villages of Bangalow (pictured) and Federal.

Bangalow is known for its heritage architecture, boutique shops, and cosy cafés. Stroll down the main street, browse the local markets, and enjoy a farm-to-table meal.

Federal, a much smaller and quieter village, offers a peaceful retreat with its artsy vibe and the famous Doma Café, where you can enjoy delicious Japanese-inspired cuisine on their beautiful deck under the trees. There’s a general store for supplies in Federal, too. The best part? It’s only a 20-minute drive from the Cromwell Farmhouse and Middle Shed.

  • Tip: Check out Ciao Mate! in Bangalow for great pizza or the Bangalow farmer’s markets every Saturday morning from 7am – 11am

Local Art & Culture

Byron is rich in creativity, with numerous galleries and studios showcasing local talent.

Check out The Lone Goat Gallery in Byron, Ninbella and Hammer and Hand in Bangalow to see local artisan talent.

The Crystal Castle & Shambhala Gardens is a unique attraction, offering stunning views & botanical gardens with rainforest walks, along with its crystal collections. They house some of the world’s largest amethyst geodes, a huge smoky quartz, and other rare crystals.

How’s the Serenity?!

Pack a picnic and take a scenic drive through the Hinterland’s rolling hills, passing macadamia farms, banana plantations, and fields of grazing cattle. Don’t miss the lookout at St Helena (as shown in the video above), where you can enjoy panoramic views stretching from the Hinterland to the coast.

With its serene landscapes, charming villages, and vibrant culture, the Byron Bay Hinterland is an idyllic destination for a weekend escape.

Only Staying For The Weekend?
Our Suggested Itinerary…

Friday nightWave goodbye to work, pack your bags and check in to Farm House or Middle Shed. If you’re arriving late, we’ll make sure the lights are on for you (past guests rate our check-in experience as super smooth).

Saturday Wake slowly to the song of bird song…and not much else. Make yourself a coffee from the locally roasted beans we supply for your stay, and then head down to the Bangalow Markets (25-minute drive) for delicious food (and grab any supplies you might need), pop into the Ninbella gallery and take a stroll through the village.
Stop into Federal on your way back and check out Doma (and maybe grab a few sushi rolls for an easy afternoon snack?) before heading back to Cromwell Farms. Spend the afternoon exploring the farm and collecting eggs from the chooks, or soaking in the hot tub/pool at Farm House or taking in the view from the outdoor tub at Middle Shed. Read your book, take a nap, mix some cocktails – the key here is relaxation.

Sunday – After a leisurely breakfast at home, head out to Minyon Falls and either enjoy the 13km loop track or simply admire the view from the lookout. If you’re hungry for more stunning vistas, head down the hills to the Saint Helena lookout, where you’ll see Byron stretched out in front of you in all its glittering glory! Continue on to Mullumbimby and stop at our favourite butcher, Devine Quality Meats, for your favourite cuts for a sunset cook-up.

Or, stay home and do sweet nothing. Our stays are equipped with all the things you need for a relaxing time away, and with views like this, we won’t blame you for not leaving the house!
