Cromwell Farms + Devine Quality Meats =
Rare, Well-Done and A Cut Above: The Perfect Match
When the opportunity arose to take over the local institution and neighbourhood gem, Devine Quality Meats, Greg Cromwell and Jay O’Harae jumped at the chance.
Having served Mullumbimby and the wider Byron Bay Shire for over 30 years, Devine Quality Meats is a cornerstone of top-quality, locally sourced meats and trusted service. Today, we see so many large supermarket chains pushing out independent retailers and compromising our ability to purchase local products from small, knowledgeable, and ethical businesses. The Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC) reports a decline in local, independent butchers from above 20% to 17% in recent years.
For many small towns, having a dedicated butcher shop is now a rare treat.
Greg and Jay have strong ties within the community and both live and run their own farms in the Byron Bay Shire. This allows them to not only source as local as possible but also to understand the importance of the field-to-market chain — how to get the best and freshest meat from the land to your table in the most sustainable way. They have enjoyed strengthening their ties with local restaurants, chefs, and other small businesses in the Shire to keep our region eating well and supporting local farmers. Their dedication ensures that the people of Mullumbimby and beyond can rely on fresh, ethically sourced products.
Since taking the reins of Mullum’s butcher, Jay and Greg have kept the same classic service alive, and you will still see Vince Devine — the original owner and shop’s namesake — behind the counter and the butcher block. With his many years of skills and experience (last Christmas was his 55th year of smoking hams for Mullum!), having Vince on board is invaluable. Butchery is a time-honored tradition that connects people to the origins of their food, blending skill, craftsmanship, and respect for the animals. It plays a vital role in preserving knowledge of sustainable meat practices and ensuring nothing goes to waste.
When they’re not at the butcher shop or on the farm, you’ll find Jay supporting the Byron Bay Football Club, and Greg wearing a multitude of hats — from running Cromwell Farms to peddling Australian boots. They’d love to serve you at Devine Meats, 64 Stuart Street in Mullumbimby — just down the road from Mullum’s iconic Middle Pub.
See you soon!
